I've heard of Baja, where is it?
Baja California is a 1000-mile long peninsula that starts just south of California and stretches south into the Pacific Ocean. It's not part of the United States, it's part of Mexico, but is separated from mainland Mexico by the Sea of Cortez (also known as the Gulf of California).

Where do these adventures start and finish?
The starting point for most adventures is San Diego, California.  You are responsible for getting yourself to San Diego (not included in Adventure price).
The nearest airport is San Diego International Airport (also called Lindberg Field).
If driving you will be given directions to our facility where your vehicle will remain safe while you are in Baja.
From San Diego we will transport you to Baja, Mexico, in our vans/trucks.  We do not ride the dirt-bikes in California.
After crossing into Baja we utilize 4 start locations (Tecate and Ensenada being the most common) and many different night stop locations.  Every ride is different and custom taking into consideration each individual group.

How much does a Baja Bound Adventure cost?
We don't have a "standard" adventure length or route. We customize every adventure for that specific group. Currently our most popular ride is our 5-Day Adventure but all you have to do is tell us how long you want to ride and we'll do it! See prices.

How long of an adventure can I do?
We operate trips of 3-12 days in length.

How big of a group will I be riding with?
We try to make each group 8-10 riders.
Other tour groups consistently run 15-20 riders in the group, we see it all the time.  We would rather you AND us have more fun with a smaller group size.

Can I book a private adventure?
We have an 8 rider minimum and we can handle up to 18 riders (see comment above). If you want a private group and you have less than 8 riders call us and we can discuss it.

Is the water to safe to drink?
We will supply you with all the purified water you'll need throughout the adventure. Whether you're filling up your drink system, or just brushing your teeth, we'll have plenty of purified water.

How about the food?
Our bet is that you'll gain weight on a Baja Bound Adventure. You order off the menu in most cases including great steaks and incredibly fresh seafood. People comment all the time about how much good food there was on the trip, something they hadn't expected.
Breakfasts and dinners are always served in nice restaurants. Lunches can be from restaurants or deli sandwiches served trail side by our support vehicles.

Where do we sleep?
All nights are spent in the nicest hotels available. All rooms have showers and the normal facilities. Most have TVs and in-room phones. Some nights will even have room service, spa (a massage after a long ride is nice), and jacuzzi. Some places we stay you can walk out of your room and your feet are in the white sand of a beautiful beach!
Accommodations are based on double occupancy.

What should I bring with me?
Typical off road riding apparel is recommended. The more protective gear the better.
You won't need much in the way of street clothes (since you'll be riding most of the time!) so pack light.
When you sign up for an adventure with us you will be sent a complete list of riding and non-riding things you should bring.
Be sure you have a valid Passport.  It is needed for return into the US.  Don't make us leave you in Baja!

Is there anything I shouldn't bring with me?
Do not bring any illegal drugs or weapons of any kind! A Mexican jail is not where you want to end up! A single bullet can put you in jail for 3 years! There are military checkpoints along the highway for our safety and some now have drug-sniffing dogs. If our staff even suspects you have anything illegal we will not hesitate to dump you at a Baja bus station and eliminate you from the ride! We will also publicly humiliate you in front of everyone because of your stupidity.
DON'T BRING ANY DOPE, DRUGS, WEAPONS, or AMMO!!

Please read the above paragraph again.

Also, many off-roaders are into hunting or shooting.  If this includes YOU we suggest you  thourghly clean out your gearbag or purchase a new one for the ride.  You might miss a lone bullet when cleaning your bag and we don't want that bullet in Baja!

What condition will the bike I rent from you be in?
The XR or CRFX you rent from us will be in tip-top shape. Our bikes are within 1 season new, they get serviced before each ride, and you'll be roosting with new Dunlop tires. All our bikes are equipped with larger capacity IMS tanks, Applied Racing triple clamps top and bottom, Applied taper bars, MSR (Cycra) style handguards, aluminum skid plates, Maxima lubricants, Ready Filter air filters, and suspension modified by Precision Concepts.  We strive for excellence and we understand how important it is to have a fresh, serviced, good condition motorcycle.

What if I crash and damage the rental bike I'm riding?
We require a fully refundable $200 deposit on all bike rentals for damage other than normal wear and tear. Items damaged will be deducted from your damage deposit.

Should I bring extra cash, travelers' checks, or credit cards?
The only things we don't cover are your bar tab, phone calls, purchases (like souvenirs), medical treatment, and night clubs.
If you don't drink alcohol then less cash. If you do drink, well, you be the judge on that.
If you are in need of any medical treatment we'll work together as a team to be sure you're taken care of but having extra $ ready is great.
There are fun night clubs in a few locations (mainly Ensenada, La Paz, & Cabo), some people spend quite a bit, it's your call.
A few examples -- A client recently ('08) decided to do a wheelie in a small town, in front of a Cop car!  That cost him $150 (US) at the Police station.  A local friend down there ('09) for a fun ride with his buddies (not a tour ride) took a hard spill and got to pay $400 (US) for an ambulance ride back to San Diego (they were riding without any support crew or truck).  We've had clients spend all their money in night clubs and have to borrow from us and others...
Bring cash in small denominations - one's, five's, and ten's work best. Don't expect a bartender or souvenir store guy to give you change for a Fifty or Hundred.
Tipping the support crew is always appreciated.
Don't bother with travelers' checks. Most places we visit won't take a credit card, although you should bring a couple along just in case of emergency. If your ride finishes in Loreto, La Paz, or Cabo then you can plan on using credit for your extended stay.

How dangerous is it?  (riding in Baja)
We have an excellent safety record. We are extremely safety conscious. We have some rules of the road we expect all riders to obey and we always try to work together as a team to help each other be safe. But it's dirt bike riding, people crash, it's part of the sport.
We utilize helmet radio communications between the lead rider, sweep rider, and support trucks and we also carry Globalstar satellite phones on the trail and in the support trucks to assist in your safety.
Other Tour groups have had riders DIE on trips.
It's only as dangerous as you make it. Ride within your ability and you'll be fine.
It's not a race, it's a trailride.
You do not want to plan on any medical assistance being available in remote areas nor should you count on being evacuated in a hurry if injured.  DO NOT assume a helicopter will be sent for you, it WILL NOT.
Our Staff does have First Aid training but we DO NOT claim to be EMTs or doctors and we DO NOT claim to be able to "fix" you if you get injured.

The simple truth is that Baja is a remote place and you DO NOT want to get seriously injured there.
Any Tour group that makes "feel good" claims about your safety or being able to easily evacuate you from Baja is NOT being honest with you.

Please read the above paragraphs again.

Is Baja safe?  (as a place to visit)
You've heard horror stories and seen on 20/20 and other TV shows about how dangerous Mexico City is. That's NOT showing Baja! No, the cabbie is not going to rob you, your stuff in your hotel room won't be stolen, and your bike won't disappear over night. In our honest opinion Baja is far safer than any good sized city in the US. Many of the places we stay at are remote and don't even have locks on the hotel doors.
It's very safe in our opinion.

Will I be able to stay in contact with my family while in Baja?
Yes. There are telephones at the larger towns and in your rooms at some hotels. Some of the hotels we stay at do not have phones. We always have at least 2 Globalstar satellite phones with us which you are welcome to use.

What kind of weather can I expect on this trip?
The weather in Baja changes dramatically and quickly. You could begin a day riding in the snow and only a few hours later be doing wheelies on the beach sand. December through March are the most likely months we would get rain or snow. Mid-July through mid-September is usually very hot in Baja.
The weather condition is really a crap shoot every trip. We could have snow one weekend and highs in the 80's the next. We can only get a good idea of the conditions about 5 days prior to each adventure.

Do you rent riding gear?
Only partial gear.  We have available elbow pads, shoulder/chest protection (plastic), and enduro jackets.  We only have these because some riders choose to not wear these items at their home riding areas or because the climate dictates.
We do NOT rent full gear sets.
We feel that if you consider yourself a "rider" and you do not own the proper gear then you are NOT capable of riding in Baja with Baja Bound Adventures.

Do you have an age limit?
We do not have an age limit but we prefer all riders to be at least 18. If your son/daughter is younger than 18 we can discuss their riding experience to determine if they are suited to a Baja adventure.
We also have a couple Parent/Son/Daughter rides each year. Usually these rides are during the Summer when kids are out of school. Check our schedule for updates.

How much riding experience must I have to ride with Baja Bound?
We DO NOT take complete beginners. We expect all riders to have had some off-road riding experience on a dirtbike. You need to have complete understanding of all the controls of a dirtbike, especially the brakes! Even if you are a seasoned street rider we still suggest getting in at least a few hours practice on a dirt bike before riding Baja.
We do our very best to only group together riders of similar riding ability. We want all of our guests to have a great time and not feel like they rode too easy terrain or too difficult terrain.

When is payment required?
We book on a first come, first serve basis. Your spot on an adventure is reserved with a $500 non-refundable (creditable) deposit. Full payment is required one month before departure.

Do you accept credit cards?
Yes.
